At our recent annual dinner meeting, held at the Puritan Backroom this year, we welcomed in several new officers. Peggy DeWever has graciously accepted the President's seat for the 4th time as a NAWIC Granite State Chapter member. Peggy was one of the initial charter members of Chapter #218 and it's because of women like her that our chapter thrives! Thank you Peggy!
Beth Hamilton is a new Director on our Board and has been a member since 2013. She manages the Local Technical Assistance Program in NH which is a wonderful resource to any municipality or private company who maintains, designs or constructs local roads and bridges. Thank you Beth for stepping up to a Director seat!
F. L. Merrill Construction, Inc., has moved to a new location at 35 Veteran's Drive in Loudon, NH . Congratulations on their new 3200 sq ft office space and 6800 sq ft shop.
Congratulations to Catherine Schoenenberger for being voted in as the new NAWIC REGION 14 DIRECTOR and most recently the National NAWIC Member of the Year! We could not be more proud of this amazing Granite State Chapter Past President who has mentored us all in one way or another.
Catherine who became a NAWIC member in 2008, generously donates her time, energy and leadership to so many non-profit organizations. Her passion for construction and public works is evident in all that she does! She is currently Region 14's Chair of the PR & Marketing Committee and also chairs the National Diversity Committee for the American Public Works Association! She is the President-Elect for the NH Public Works Association and owns her own company (Stay Safe Traffic Products, Inc.) as a leading supplier of traffic control and safety products throughout New England.
She founded New Hampshire Construction Career Days in 2009, which has allowed over 3,700 students to experience careers in transportation and construction through hands on exhibits and activities. This woman does not stop! Her leadership, enthusiasm and positive attitude are truly infectious! If you don't know her....you should! She's one of those people that inspires you to be a better person. The Granite State Chapter could not be more proud of Catherine! Way to go - we love you!
Habitat for Humanity Manchester is currently accepting volunteer sign ups through July 26, 2014. On Saturday June 14 & 21 one of our members, Patty Stagno, will be participating in Women Build. To sign up, go to http://womenbuild.habitatmanchester.org
Last year Patty and I participated in the event and it was a ton of fun! Here is a photo below from the group that worked all day on three decks!
I was very humbled to receive an award this year at the New England APWA Public Works Week Luncheon. This new award category recognizes and encourages young New England Chapter members who have demonstrated an initial commitment to the profession and the Chapter and show potential for future growth within APWA.
Rich Benevento, immediate Past President gave the following speech at the luncheon, "This individual works as Town Engineer and is a registered professional engineer with the reputation for diligence, fairness and tenacity. While working in a professional capacity our award winner balances her professional career with a vibrant family life as a mother of 3. If taking care of her own children is not enough, she is also passionate about sharing her passion with youth, frequently, speaking at high school career days and in the past few years has been a driving force behind organizing NH Construction Career Days through her membership on the NAWIC Board. NH Construction Career Days is a hands on learning experience for over 900 students. Especially in a profession with less than 7% represented by females, she serves as a shining example. She was instrumental in the creation of the Chapter’s very robust and successful Young Professional Group who by the way unanimously nominated her to the awards committee. This year she was recognized by WZID in NH as one of NH’s Top 20 Outstanding Women and now the New England Chapter of APWA recognizes her as our first Chapter Young Professional of the Year - MEGHAN THERIAULT."
Congratulations to Elaine Hamel of Girls at Work, Inc. for being recognized as one of New Hampshire's 2014 Remarkable Women by NH Magazine!!! Please CLICK HERE to read the full article on how Elaine empowers young girls at-risk to gain more confidence through the use of power tools. You can also read about the other 19 remarkable women as well! Way to go Elaine we love what you do and agree that you are "REMARKABLE"!!!
I'm excited to say that I was nominated and selected as one of WZID's 20 Outstanding Women in NH for 2014. Our current president, Patricia Stagno, won this award last year so it's pretty neat that a 2nd Granite State Chapter member was selected.
I'm being recognized for my involvement with several schools where I teach students about careers in engineering, at the high school level, and all about construction and public works, at middle and elementary school levels. I combine this educational aspect with touch-a-truck events during Public Works Week and over the summer at the Goffstown library and schools. I've even been to my sons preschool to talk all about construction and public works to the children there as my feeling is your never to young to learn about construction!
Lastly, I am the Exhibitor Coordinator, for an amazing event called NH Construction Career Days which is held annually for over 1,000 high school students across NH. This event allows students the chance to try hands-on activities and learn about construction and transportation related careers. We offer welding, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, engineering, logging, tree climbing, surveying, plowing, truck driving, heavy equipment operation and more! We also team up with several colleges and apprenticeship programs so students are aware of their options after high school. I encourage you to check out our website at www.nhccd.weebly.com. We are always looking for sponsors, exhibitors and volunteers to help with this fantastic event!
